A highlight of Vietnam’s annual sports calendar, the Thanh Nien Newspaper 2015 Under-21 Football Tournament includes the 19th national tournament, which runs from Oct. 22 to Nov. 1, as well as the 9th international tournament, which will be held from Nov. 20 to Nov. 29. The events showcase top footballing talent from around Vietnam and Asia.
Reigning champion Hoang Anh Gia Lai Arsenal JMG will be aiming to defend their international tournament title against several strong teams, including outfits from Malaysia, Myanmar and South Korea.
“Myanmar will send the team that competed at the recent U20 World Cup in New Zealand, with seven new players who won the silver medal at last month’s 28th Southeast Asian Games in Singapore,” deputy chairman of Vietnam Football Federation Tran Quoc Tuan told Thanh Nien.
The domestic event will see a total of 25 teams competing, divided into four groups.
The tournament has been held in different locations over the years — in 2014 Can Tho was the host with 52,000 people packing into the city’s main stadium.
“It was successful more than we thought it would be,” said Christina Nguyen, one of the planners for the yearly event.
This year’s edition takes place in Ho Chi Minh City’s Thong Nhat Stadium, with a capacity of 20,000.
